Field trips

DRONEBOAR – Use of drones for wild boar census and management (Aiguamolls de l’Empordà; Alt Empordà)

Visit to a Natura 2000 wetland area with high wild boar density. Demonstration of the use of drones with thermal and HD cameras for wild boar census. Capture techniques (corral and cage traps) applied by rangers of the Catalan Government (Cos d’Agents Rurals). Visit to the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà Natural Park visitor’s center.

ROADBOAR – Fauna passages. Census by camera trapping (Montseny; Girona)

Visit to wildlife passages (underpasses and ecoducts) used by wildboar in the High Speed Railway and a highway. Techniques applied for monitoring wildlife in fauna passages. Visit at the Montseny Natural Park Visitor’s center. Demonstration of camera trap methodology for wild boar density estimation.

URBANBOAR – Mitigation of wild boar presence and capture techniques in urban areas (Collserola; Barcelona)

Visit to areas of Barcelona beside Collserola Natural Park where wild boar regularly venture into urban areas. Capture techniques used for removal of wild boar and Vietnamese pot-bellied pigs and hybrids. Explanation of conflicts and non-lethal mitigation measures used to discourage wild boar presence in urban areas. Lunch at traditional picnic area within Collserola Natural Park.

WINEBOAR – Measures to reduce damages (Sant Llorenç del Munt; Bages)

Visit to agricultural areas including vineyards where different techniques have been applied to avoid wild boar damage (perimeter fences, electric fences and other methods).
Visit at the Sant Llorenç del Munt Natural Park visitor’s center.
